A First-Timer's Guide to Amboseli National Park

BACK TO BLOG

WHEN TO GO

Amboseli is famous for its dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and large herds of elephants. The dry season from June to October offers clear skies, thin vegetation and excellent game‑viewing, while the short rains in November and December bring a burst of newborn wildlife. If you prefer fewer crowds, consider the shoulder months of May and late October, when prices are a bit lower and the landscape is still vibrant.

HOW TO GET THERE

The park lies about 240 km southeast of Nairobi. Most visitors fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the private airstrip at Amboseli, a 45‑minute flight that costs roughly KES 12,000–15,000 per person. Driving is another option; a well‑maintained road connects Nairobi to the park in about 4‑5 hours, and a 4×4 hire with a driver typically runs KES 18,000‑22,000 per day, fuel excluded. Remember to carry a valid driver’s licence and insurance if you plan to self‑drive.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Game drives start early, usually at 6 am, to catch the morning light and active wildlife. The park’s open savannah is home to over 400 elephants, as well as lions, cheetahs, giraffes and a spectacular birdlife roster of more than 400 species. The iconic sight is a herd of elephants framed by the snow‑capped peak of Kilimanjaro, especially striking at sunrise or sunset. Roads are well‑maintained, but during the short rains some tracks can become muddy, so a sturdy vehicle is advisable.

BEST TIME FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

Photographers love the golden hours of dawn and dusk when Mount Kilimanjaro glows pink and the shadows enhance the texture of the plains. The dry season offers the clearest views of the mountain, while the short rains bring lush green backdrops and dramatic cloud formations. If you’re keen on bird photography, the wet season (March‑May) sees migratory species arrive, adding colour to your portfolio.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

From luxury lodges such as Ol Tukai and Amboseli Serena to budget campsites like Kibo Safari Camp, the park caters to all budgets. A mid‑range lodge typically costs KES 25,000‑35,000 per night for a double room, inclusive of meals and game drives. Camping fees are around KES 5,000 per person per night, but you’ll need to bring your own gear or rent from Nairobi. Book early during peak months, as rooms fill up quickly.

TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS

Carry a light jacket for early mornings; temperatures can drop to 10 °C even in the tropics. Sunscreen, a wide‑brimmed hat and plenty of water are essential for the midday heat. Pack a pair of binoculars – they make spotting distant herds much easier. Respect the park’s rules: stay inside the vehicle unless a guide says otherwise, keep noise to a minimum and never feed the animals. Finally, bring a good camera with a zoom lens; the wildlife often appears at a distance.
